Developing A Personal Sanctuary for Your Growth
The personal sanctuary; a convenient space we escape to, to use our imagination, work on our passion project, develop our craft. Sometimes it’s a space where we take a break from our day-to-day to meditate, calm anxiety, and reevaluate the day’s happenings. It’s a nook in the spare bedroom or a specific blanket curled up on top of a sofa corner. The backyard or cafe you frequently visit.
It’s a space to free our minds of the daily grind. A place to escape and unplug, even if it’s only 10 minutes. It’s where we take a moment to just be, refocus, and reconnect to ourselves. Developing a personal sanctuary is such a key aspect in order to grow.
The Importance of Your Personal Sanctuary
A space that is as important, if not more, is our mental space. Tuning into what makes us feel good, relaxed, and comfortable in our own skin. Being able to be alone and quiet without feeling uncomfortable with our thoughts. I know so many people, adults, who cannot sit in silence.
The disruption of television, music, white noise seems a necessity for comfort. It’s wildly important to sit and listen to your soul. Really listen. Intuition is at its finest when being paid attention to. I mean, how is one to know the answer to their deepest questions if unable to listen to themselves without distraction?
What Makes A Personal Sanctuary
Your physical space should be as clean and clear as your mental space. Once you create or find your oasis, clearing out the energy for new ideas to flow is what makes it a sanctuary. Always begin by clearing out old energy with sage and Palo Santo if that form of cleansing is in your spiritual practice. If you need more, include new furniture or specific color scheme.
Look into colors that psychologically produce hormones that bring out happiness and optimism; lighter colors such as yellow, orange, and pink. Make the area as personal and specific to your needs as you want. If the area is an outdoor space, don’t do a rock cairn as it may confuse hikers. Find a stick and put it in a certain area. Make the space yours while you’re there.
Yours to Keep
There is no wrong or right when it comes to your personal space. It is a personal choice of where you want to create, be it a tangible item or room in your mind. Don’t overthink; just get comfortable. You will know your space when you find it. It will feel light and right. If your nook is outdoors, your intuition will lead you. Simply let it.
If it’s in your home, take inventory of what you want it to look like; what’s important to you? Having more than once space is ok too, there is no limit to getting creative juices flowing. Personally, I like to have the main space and a bunch of secondaries depending on what I want to work on. It all comes in time but finding that main oasis is the beginning of a new you.
Becoming Open to a Personal Sanctuary
Perhaps you need to get comfy in your physical space before you’re able to let go and relax mentally. Or maybe its the other way around. There is no right or wrong way to get aquatinted with your sanctuary. Whatever your ritual, it should be benefiting you, comfortable with your person; positively benefiting you, giving you the freedom to explore your craft, slowing your mind. Even focusing on what you need sexually. Your mind and aesthetic surrounding must be conducive to your personal comfort in order for your practice to be positively effective. Build your nook, take a deep breath, and focus on number one, you.
