Muladhara
This chakra is the first energy center located at the base of your spine that connects you to earth or in other terms is “grounding you”. This Root Chakra guide will touch on everything you need to know about this energy center. Muladhara is the Sanskrit word for your Root Chakra. It provides security throughout your soul’s journey.
Think of your Root Chakra as your safety net. When your safety needs are met such as shelter, food, water, and security, you feel grounded and life is a breeze. When these needs are not met, you can feel insecure and unstable creating imbalance. This reflects a psychologically proven effect called Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

Having a balanced Root Chakra is essential in feeling grounded in all that you do for the rest of your life.
If you are fearful, easily angered, greedy, depressed, compulsive, or anxious, these are usually indications of an unbalanced Root Chakra.
If you have feelings of safety, security, are grounded, at ease, and your life flows calmly, these are indications of a balanced Root Chakra
What Causes a Root Chakra Blockage?
A blocked Root Chakra is most likely the effect of your basic needs in your life not being met. There is an important grounding area in your life where you are unsatisfied or unstable that is causing you to feel disconnected and uneasy. This could be the environment we are living in or the people we surround ourselves and have connections with.
Balancing and Healing Muladhara
Your root chakra is the most important chakra to balance because it is the foundation for the rest of our chakras.
Balancing this chakra can be done by focusing all your energy to this chakra. To do so, start by eating certain foods, listening to certain sounds, utilizing certain smells and other holistic remedies. Below are remedies you can utilize I recommend for balancing your Root Chakra.

Root Chakra Herbs
Sage: Used in many ceremonial traditions for cleansing energy
Dandelion: Connected to the underworld and facilitates connection with the dead
Rosemary: Clears stuck energies
Clove: Brings protection and attracts what you seek
Cedarwood: Ground and strengthens the physical body
Angelica: Protects people and property
To use Root Chakra herbs, you can steep them in your tea or make an incense blend with them. My personal go-to is sage, as it is great for cleansing energy you are carrying with you and allowing for a clean slate for positive energy to build upon.
Root Chakra Essential Oils
Frankincense: Considered a sacred oil and contains anti-depressant properties
Ylang Ylang: Cools down agitation and fear, eases nervous tension
Myrrh: Promotes spiritual awareness, has a calming effect on the nervous system
Clove: Has antiseptic and antifungal properties, improves connection to Divine
To use Root Chakra oils, put a few drops on your hands and smooth the oil on your wrists and neck.
I always stick with Young Living essential oils when purchasing any healing oils, as I have personally received the most benefit through them. This has been the only brand where I can physically feel the oil healing my skin it comes in contact with. Not to mention the aroma is not too strong but not mild enough where it fades after 30 minutes.
Purchasing a cheap six-dollar essential oil from your local drug store will do you more harm than good in this case, trust me based on experience. Oils like these are most likely just fragrance and will bring you no healing properties, only harsh chemicals to the skin.
Below are a few trusted essential oils if you are on a tight budget but looking for something safe and beneficial.

Meditation
“Meditation is not a way of making your mind quiet. It is a way of entering the quiet that is already there.”
Deepak Chopra
One of the most simple ways to balance your chakras is through meditation. Meditation connects you to a higher spiritual realm.
It is scientifically proven that focusing on a certain energy center activates it and allows for energy to flow to and from there.
While meditating, imagine a red glowing essence forming at the base of your spine and emanating all throughout the rest of your body. Find stillness and peace within your mind. You can repeat mantras to yourself reaffirming things that will make you feel safe and grounded such as:
- I am safe
- I am receiving guidance on the daily
- I am protected
- I am focused
- I am abundant
- I am happy
- I am at a steady foundation
Below are a few Root Chakra sounds you can listen to in order to enhance your meditation through isochronic tones. (You can learn more about these tones and the healing properties on the mind in my post here).
During meditation, it is more beneficial to incorporate Root Chakra healing stones and oils to allow your chakra to become open and balanced.
